Reflection:
Good evening all. For vespers tonight I want to read for you
a recent favorite poem of mine, one I’ve been hoping to share for some time now.
It’s called “Sometimes
a Wild God,” by Tom Hirons, and I find it particularly appropriate for this
time of year.
In summer Minnesotans reconnect with nature, in the lakes,
the hiking trails, the camping resorts. Vacations become for us spiritual experiences.
It’s always easier to connect to the Creator when one is so immersed within the
wonders of Creation.
That’s what this poem is really about: reconnecting with the
wilder side of reality, the wonder and the miracle and the awe of it all, the
vitality beneath our veneer of civilization. In one sense, this is not a poem
about Jesus—at least I do not think that the poet intended for it to be.
Yet at the same time, I find that it is absolutely about
Jesus, the Word of God through whom all things are made, and without whom not one
thing comes to be. St Paul believed that God could speak through pagan poets. Let’s
see if we agree.
Sometimes a wild god comes to the table.
He is awkward and does not know the ways
Of porcelain, of fork and mustard and silver.
His voice makes vinegar from wine.

You will probably fear him.
He reminds you of something dark
That you might have dreamt,
Or the secret you do not wish to be shared.

The hills echo and the grey stones ring
With laughter and madness and pain.

The house takes off from the ground.
Clouds climb through the windows;
Lightning pounds its fists on the table.
