Crownless

Children’s Sermon
23 November 2025

Hey, guys. I have a question for you this morning. What do you think of when you imagine a king? Do you think of a crown, and a castle, and an army? Do you think of wealth and of power?

Well, today is Christ the King Sunday, when we celebrate Jesus as our King; the only true King; indeed, the King of Kings. But Jesus doesn’t look much like the kings we might imagine, does He? He doesn’t have any armor, or a golden crown, or even a sword.

The Bible tells us that the only sword that Jesus has is the sword of His mouth, His Word. The only crown He has is a crown of thorns. His only throne is a cross, which is what they used to hang criminals on. He doesn’t seem like much of a king at all.

But that’s because we get things backwards. Jesus isn’t our King because He’s rich, or because He likes to fight. Jesus is our King because He made us, every one of us; He was before all things, and He holds all things together. He’s our King because He knows us, and loves us, and saves us; from sin, from death, from Hell.

Jesus is our King because He gives up everything for us, all that He has, and all that He is. And He forgives us, no matter what we do. He forgave humanity even while we were killing Him! But that didn’t keep Him down for long. Three days later, He was right back up and calling us home.

People tend to think that authority lies in how tough you are, how rich you are, what you can buy, or whom you could hurt. Jesus shows us that’s not true. He’s our King, not because He’s powerful—Jesus, believe me, is far beyond all power—but He’s our King because He loves us and will never let us go. And that kind of love can never die.

When the last armies have been defeated, the last coin melted down, the last castle crumbled to ruins, Christ will still be King. He will still love us and bring us to life. And nothing on Earth, nor in Heaven, nor in Hell, can ever change that.

His love made the world. His love will save it too.

Sound good? Okay. Let’s pray.
